This site is a clearinghouse of historic trail research—research that locates and describes historic travel routes such as the Lewis and Clark Trail, Mullan's Military Road, and the Old North Road.

We are a non-profit partnership between Steven F. Russell, the National Park Service, Kris Townsend, and the dedicated trail researchers who have contributed their works to this site. We offer this site free of charge and without advertising, and we do not pay authors for their submissions. If you have something to contribute, let us know: webmaster@trailresearch.org

What we do:

  • We archive past research, unaltered and free of peer review.
  • We publish new trail trail research.
  • We assist researchers move their work from analog to digital.

Our goal is to:

  • Preserve the legacy of past researchers.
  • Share historic trail research on the Internet.
  • Give voice to those in a field not well-served by traditional publishing media.
  • Encourage new research.
