Starting in 1922, Jack Harlan began his Clearwater Republican and Clearwater Tribune newspaper series on the history. The Lolo Trail is a general name for the routes followed by Lewis and Clark in 1805–06 and the route of the Nez Perce during their 1877 flight to freedom. During this time, Harlan traveled extensively—primarily along the newly constructed Lolo Motorway—to find the original trail and Lewis and Clark campsites. He found some of the original trail and old traces of the Bird-Truax Trail.
In 2002, trail researchers Steve Russell and Larry Jones transcribed Harlan’s articles and compiled them into a single document. Russell has also annotated the original text. Russell last’s edition of this document was complete 2011 and is presented here.
