L&C National Historic Trail Eastern Legacy Extension

Contributed by US National Park Service (LCNHT)

On 8 May 2008, Public Law 110, Section 343 tasked the Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail (LCNHT) of the National Park Service with extending the designated National Historic Trail to include “Eastern Legacy sites”. Many historical travel routes were considered, and the documents archived here provide an analysis that may be of interest to historians and trail researchers.

During this time, dedicated members of the Ohio River Chapter of the Lewis and Clark Trail Heritage Foundation (also known as the LCTA) created a travel brochure featuring Lewis and Clark sites along the Ohio River. The original brochure is archived here.

Throughout the analysis period, the Lewis & Clark Trail Alliance (LCTA) worked vigorously to see the final approval from the U.S. Congress resulting in the inclusion of the entire length of the Ohio River and the Mississippi River from the mouth of the Ohio to the mouth of the Missouri rivers.—Kris Townsend, ed.
